Here are some of the images of Diwali from my brother's house and the neighborhood. Yesterday, the next door neighbor, Mrs. Girija came by with gifts of special sweets she had prepared for Diwali. Included in this post are pictures of lamps that are lit during this festival of lights. Light symbolizes knowledge and darkness symbolizes ignorance. Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. The traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the negative tendencies get slowly exhausted and the ego perishes.
